Sherlock5 · Dealer Add-Ons
What are dealer add-ons and which ones can be cancelled?
Dealer add-ons are optional products that dealerships sell during the finance and insurance (F&I) process. They are added to your loan, often without much explanation. Some can be cancelled and refunded after purchase.
How add-ons get into your loan
1
You agree on a car price and walk to the finance office to sign paperwork.
2
The finance manager presents a menu of optional products, sometimes quickly, sometimes with a tablet where you only see the signature field.
3
Add-ons get rolled into the loan. The monthly payment goes up by a small amount that feels easy to say yes to, but the total cost is $2,000 to $8,000 extra.
The FTC found unauthorized or undisclosed add-ons at most dealerships it investigated in 2024.

Common questions
Are dealer add-ons required?
No. All add-ons in the finance office are optional. If a dealer tells you something is required, ask to see it in writing in the manufacturer's purchase requirements. Taxes, registration, and documentation fees are not optional, but product add-ons are.
Can I negotiate the price of add-ons?
Yes. Add-on prices are not fixed. Dealers mark them up significantly, often 2x to 3x the cost. You can negotiate or decline them entirely.
How much do add-ons typically add to a car loan?
A full package of add-ons often runs $3,000 to $8,000 on top of the vehicle price. Over a 60 to 72 month loan, you also pay interest on that amount.
What if I did not realize I had add-ons?
This is common. Check your purchase agreement for line items like GAP, VSC, BSC, or protection packages. Or upload your paperwork to Sherlock5 for a free scan.
