How to cancel an extended warranty bought at a dealership
Extended warranties sold by car dealers are vehicle service contracts (VSCs). Almost all of them include a cancellation clause. You can cancel at any time — even years after purchase — and get a refund for the unused portion.

Extended warranty vs. vehicle service contract
"Extended warranty" is common shorthand but technically these are vehicle service contracts (VSCs). Only manufacturers can offer true warranties. What dealers sell is a service contract — and that distinction matters because VSCs are regulated separately and almost always include cancellation rights regardless of what a salesperson tells you.
How to cancel, step by step
1
Find your service contract
Look for a document titled "Vehicle Service Contract," "Extended Service Plan," or similar in your finance paperwork. It shows the contract number, provider name, coverage term in months and miles, and the price you paid.
2
Go to the dealer finance department in person
Walk in and ask for the finance manager or accounting department. Do not call — calls are easy to ignore and delay. Bring your service contract and purchase agreement.
3
Ask for the Cancellation Request Form
Say you want to cancel your vehicle service contract. Fill out the form completely. Before you leave, get a copy with their date stamp or signature on it — this is your proof the cancellation clock has started.
4
Note the current mileage
Many prorated refunds are calculated by mileage remaining. Take a photo of your odometer that day. This protects you if there is a dispute later about the refund amount.
5
Follow up with your lender
Refunds take 4 to 8 weeks. The money goes to your lender and reduces your loan principal — you will not receive a check. Call your lender after 6 weeks to confirm it was applied.
What to say
Script
"Hi, I bought a car here recently and I would like to cancel my vehicle service contract. I have the contract here. Can you give me the Cancellation Request Form so I can submit it today?"
What if the dealer refuses or stalls
This is one of the most common complaints in car buying.
The finance manager earned a commission when they sold you the contract. When you cancel, that money is clawed back. Some dealers delay deliberately to run out the full-refund window. You have rights regardless.
→Contact the warranty provider directly
Your service contract has the provider's name, phone number, and address. Call them and cancel without going through the dealer. Providers like Safe-Guard, Zurich, and EasyCare all accept direct cancellation requests.
→Put your request in writing immediately
Email the dealer finance department and CC the general manager. State your name, VIN, contract number, and the exact date you are requesting cancellation. A written timestamp protects you if they later claim you never asked.
→File a complaint if they continue to stall
File with your state Attorney General's consumer protection office and the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov. Also check if your state has a DMV or DFI that regulates dealers. Formal complaints move fast.
How the refund is calculated
After the full refund window, the refund is prorated. Most contracts use one of two methods:
Time-based
Refund = (months remaining ÷ total months) × price paid
Mileage-based
Refund = (miles remaining ÷ total miles) × price paid
A cancellation fee of $25 to $75 may apply. Check your contract.

Common questions
Can I cancel if I have already used the warranty?
Yes, as long as the contract term has not ended. The refund will be reduced by the cost of any claims already paid out under the contract.
Can I cancel an extended warranty on a used car?
Yes. The process is the same. The refund is prorated based on how much of the coverage term or mileage remains.
Does it matter how old the contract is?
You can cancel at any time before the coverage period ends. The older the contract, the smaller the refund — but for a 5-year contract with 3 years remaining, that could still be over $1,000.
What if the dealer says it is non-refundable?
Ask to see where it says that in your specific contract document. Most VSCs include cancellation rights by law. If they cannot show you a non-refundable clause, they are wrong.
Will my monthly payment go down after I cancel?
No. If the warranty was rolled into your loan, your monthly payment stays the same — but your loan balance drops by the refund amount, so you pay off the loan faster.
