How to get a GAP insurance refund from a dealership

If you paid for GAP insurance through a car dealership, you may be owed a refund for the unused portion. The refund process runs through the dealer's finance office — here is exactly how to get it.

Typical refund amount
$200–700
prorated for unused months
Processing time
4–8 weeks
from cancellation submission
Where refund goes
Your lender
applied to loan balance
What you need
GAP certificate
from your finance paperwork

When you are eligible for a refund

You paid off your car loan early
You sold or traded in the vehicle
You refinanced and your new lender has their own GAP coverage
You found out you were charged for GAP without agreeing to it
Your loan balance is now lower than your car's value

How to get the refund, step by step

1
Find your GAP certificate
Look through your paperwork from the finance office. The document is usually titled "GAP Addendum" or "Guaranteed Asset Protection Certificate." It shows the provider name, policy number, coverage term, and what you paid.
2
Calculate your expected refund
Most dealer GAP policies are prorated by time. Formula: (months remaining ÷ total months) × original price. Example: you paid $700 for 60 months, cancel after 20 months — refund is roughly (40 ÷ 60) × $700 = $467, minus any cancellation fee.
3
Go to the dealer finance department
Visit in person. Phone calls are easy to ignore. Ask specifically for the finance manager or accounting department — not the salesperson. Bring your GAP certificate and purchase agreement.
4
Submit the Cancellation Request Form
Ask for the form, fill it out completely. Get a copy with their date stamp or signature on it before you leave. This is your proof the clock has started.
5
Confirm with your lender
After 6 weeks, call your lender — not the dealer — and ask if a GAP cancellation refund has been applied to your account. The refund goes directly to your loan principal, it will not come as a check to you.

What if the dealer stalls or refuses

Dealers have a financial incentive to delay.
The finance manager earned a commission when they sold you the GAP policy. When you cancel, that commission is clawed back. Delays are common.
Contact the GAP provider directly
Your certificate has their phone number. Call and initiate cancellation yourself. You do not need the dealer to do this for you.
Send a written request with a paper trail
Email the finance department and CC the general manager. Include your name, VIN, policy number, and today's date as the requested cancellation date.
Escalate if needed
File a complaint with your state Attorney General's consumer protection division and at consumerfinance.gov (CFPB). Dealerships respond fast to formal complaints.
While you are here
GAP is usually not the only add-on in a car contract.
Typical contract breakdown
Vehicle price$42,000
GAP Insurance+$750
Extended Warranty (VSC)+$2,800
Tire & Wheel Protection+$900
Paint Protection+$995
Potentially cancellable$4,450

Common questions

Will I get a check in the mail for my GAP refund?
Usually not. If your car is financed, the refund goes directly to your lender and is applied to your loan principal. You will not see cash — instead your loan balance drops.
How long does a GAP refund take from a dealership?
4 to 8 weeks is typical. The dealer submits the form to the GAP provider, who processes it and sends the refund to your lender. If nothing has appeared after 8 weeks, call your lender directly.
Can I get a GAP refund after I pay off my car?
Yes, if the GAP policy was still active when you paid off the loan. Contact the dealer finance department with your loan payoff letter as documentation.
What if I lost my GAP paperwork?
Ask the dealer to send you a copy — they keep records of everything you signed. Alternatively, call your lender and ask if a GAP policy is attached to your loan account.
Does it matter how long ago I bought the car?
You can cancel at any time while the policy is still active. The refund will be smaller the longer you wait, since more of the coverage period has already passed.
