Dealer refuses to cancel your extended warranty
This is one of the most common complaints after buying a car. The finance manager stalls, doesn't return calls, or simply says it's not possible. It is possible. Here is what to do.
Why dealers do this
The finance manager earned a commission — typically $400–$800 — when they sold you the warranty. When you cancel, that money is clawed back from them. Stalling is deliberate, especially to run out the full-refund window after which your refund gets smaller.
What to do, in order
1
Go back in person and ask again — specifically for the accounting department
Do not call. Show up. Ask for the accounting department or office manager — not the finance manager who sold you the warranty. They process the paperwork and have no commission at stake. Say: "I want to cancel my vehicle service contract and submit a cancellation form today."
2
Call the warranty provider directly
Your service contract has the provider's name and phone number — companies like Safe-Guard, Zurich, EasyCare, or the dealer's own brand. Call them and request cancellation directly. You do not need the dealer to initiate this. Have your contract number and VIN ready.
3
Send a written cancellation request with a timestamp
Email the dealer's finance department and CC the general manager. Subject line: "Cancellation request — [your name] — [VIN]". State the date, your contract number, and that you are formally requesting cancellation. This creates a paper trail and legally establishes your cancellation date.
4
File a complaint
If the dealer continues to ignore you: file with your state Attorney General's consumer protection office and at consumerfinance.gov (CFPB). Dealers respond to formal complaints quickly because they risk their license. Include your paper trail from step 3.

Common questions
Can the dealer legally refuse to cancel?
No. If your contract includes a cancellation clause — and most do — refusal is not a legal option. They can delay the paperwork but they cannot void your right to cancel. Going directly to the warranty provider bypasses the dealer entirely.
What if the full-refund window has already passed?
You still have the right to cancel and receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of the contract. The longer you wait the smaller the refund, but for a 5-year warranty with 3 years remaining that is still $1,000 or more.
The dealer says I signed something saying it is non-refundable.
Ask them to show you where exactly it says that in your service contract document. Most VSCs include cancellation rights regardless of what the salesperson said verbally. If the written contract has a cancellation clause, you have the right to use it.
How long does the refund take once I get through?
Typically 4 to 8 weeks from the date the dealer submits the cancellation to the provider. If your car is financed, the refund goes to your lender and reduces your loan balance — you will not receive a check.
